Manchuria Opium Squad anime announced as manga returns
A new visual confirms the adaptation. The manga resumes October 5, while the anime’s format, release date, studio and cast remain unannounced.

Manchuria Opium Squad is getting an anime adaptation, according to a newly released production announcement. The news accompanies the manga’s return in the October 5 issue of Weekly Young Magazine in Japan. An anime announcement visual has been released, but the production has yet to provide a format or release date. The dated manga return gives readers something to follow now; an anime viewing schedule is still to come.
What the anime announcement confirms
The official release, reproduced in full by Dengeki Online, confirms the adaptation and unveils an announcement visual. It says the animation studio and staff will be revealed through the official website and social channels later. Anime Trending’s separately authored report also lists the format, cast and release date as unconfirmed.
That leaves the project at an announcement stage. There is no confirmed basis here for calling it a television season, a theatrical film or a streaming-only production. The released visual establishes that the adaptation has been announced; it does not establish a finished episode, a launch window or a service where viewers can watch it.
October 5 belongs to the manga’s return
The manga resumed in issue 45 of Weekly Young Magazine, which went on sale in Japan on October 5. ORICON reports that the issue contains both chapter 216 and chapter 217. This is the date attached to the returning printed serialization, and readers should keep it separate from the anime’s still-unannounced release schedule.
Tsukasa Monma continues as writer, while Tsurushima takes over the manga artwork beginning with chapter 217. Shikako, the original artist, remains credited for the original art concept in the new arrangement. These are manga credits. The announcement has not identified them as members of the anime’s production staff.
How the returning issue bridges the artwork
ORICON’s account of the editorial statement explains that chapter 216 preserves 11 pages Shikako completed before his death. Monma devised a twelfth page without characters, and the assistants supplied its background art. The completed chapter runs to 12 pages; chapter 217 then begins the continuation drawn by Tsurushima.
The official release also identifies a new manga-resumption visual drawn by Tsurushima. That artwork and the anime announcement visual accompany separate developments. A reader encountering both images should check which is being described: one marks the manga’s continuation, while the other introduces the adaptation. Neither announcement supplies the anime’s eventual staff list.
What readers can follow now
The source story is a crime suspense manga set in Manchuria in 1937. Its central character, Isamu Higata, becomes entangled in the illegal opium trade while trying to help his sick mother. Readers interested in starting the manga also have a current access update: ORICON reports a free-chapter campaign on the Japanese services YanMaga Web and Comic Days through October 11. Check each service’s current campaign terms and available chapters before reading.
For the adaptation, watch for a later announcement that names the format, release timing and distributor. The Japanese manga campaign does not establish an English-edition offer or anime streaming rights.
