Taylor Swift joins Dakota Johnson’s SNL monologue and birthday send-off
Swift joined Johnson for a comedy bit, then brought out a birthday cake at the closing goodnights. Turnstile was the episode’s musical guest.

Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance in Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue on the October 3 episode of Saturday Night Live, then returned at the end of the show with a birthday cake for the host. Johnson’s birthday fell on Sunday, October 4.
The visit reunited the Patient Zero collaborators following their music video’s September 27 MTV VMAs premiere. Their main shared scene this time was a comedy exchange about friendship. Johnson hosted the episode, Turnstile was the musical guest, and Swift’s appearance did not include a song performance.
A friendship joke brings Swift into the monologue
Johnson joked about her past relationships and the friends who supported her. She introduced Swift as her “literal therapist,” prompting the singer to appear and immediately dispute that description. The exchange became a routine about Johnson turning up at Swift’s home and oversharing.
The bit also played on their different versions of how those visits ended: Johnson expected a sleepover, while Swift described arranging a ride home. The exchange was performed comedy about the pair’s friendship.
Turnstile held the musical-guest slot
Swift’s presence did not change the episode’s announced roles. Johnson was the host, Turnstile was the musical guest, and Swift joined the spoken comedy. There was no Swift musical number in the episode.
SNL posted Johnson’s monologue on its official social account. Viewers looking for Swift’s spoken cameo should seek out that opening segment; the birthday cake appeared separately during the closing goodnights.
The Patient Zero collaboration behind the reunion
Johnson had recently appeared with Colin Farrell in Swift’s Patient Zero music video. Swift directed the video and also appeared in it, giving the two women a recent screen collaboration before they shared the SNL stage.
The video premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 27. At that ceremony, Johnson also presented Swift with the Artist Directors Honors prize. Those appearances preceded the October 3 monologue by less than a week.
A birthday cake at the goodnights
During the monologue, Johnson mentioned that her birthday would arrive at midnight, and Swift called attention to the occasion. The celebration continued at the end of the episode, when Swift came back out with a blue and white birthday cake for Johnson.
