New RuneScape MMO has no announced launch date: how Dragonwilds’ 2027 plans fit
Jagex’s newly revealed MMO grew out of a Dragonwilds expansion concept. The earlier 2027 target belongs to that expansion plan; Dragonwilds also has a separate roadmap for December 2026 and 2027.

Jagex revealed a new RuneScape MMO at RuneFest on October 3, but the reporting accompanying the announcement provides no firm release date. The project began as a proposed RuneScape: Dragonwilds expansion, according to MMORPG.com’s account of a developer briefing. Its growth into a separate MMO changes what readers can infer from the expansion’s earlier 2027 target.
For players following both projects, there are two timetables to keep apart: the new MMO is in early development, while Dragonwilds has its own announced updates. Jagex’s Dragonwilds roadmap assigns December 2026 and 2027 windows to that existing game. Those dates do not establish when the new MMO will launch.
What was announced at RuneFest
MMORPG.com’s Joseph Bradford reported that Jagex had a new RuneScape MMO in active development, based on a press briefing with developer Jesse America. In a separate account of the RuneFest keynote, Radio Times’ Alex Raisbeck reported that Mod North described development as early and cautioned that players might not see the game for several years.
That gives the announcement a clear limit: it establishes a project, not a release calendar. The several-years remark is a caution about the stage of development, rather than a dated launch commitment. Neither report provides a firm day, month or year when players will be able to start the new MMO.
Why 2027 appears in the story
According to MMORPG.com, the project originated as a Dragonwilds expansion planned for 2027. Player requests for persistent servers, larger player counts and more social features, including trading, helped push the concept beyond the scope of an expansion. America described the resulting project as its own MMO.
The distinction matters when reading a release-date headline or sharing the news: 2027 describes the earlier expansion plan. It should not be carried forward as the new MMO’s announced launch year. Similarly, the requests that influenced the project explain its direction; they are not a complete list of finished features or promises about what will be available at launch.

Dragonwilds has a separate, dated roadmap
Jagex’s October 3 Dragonwilds announcement names Luminance as the next free update, planned for December 2026. It then places the Blood Crystal Saga in 2027, with two chapters called Song of Rebellion and Crown of Night. These are plans for Dragonwilds, the existing game from which the new MMO concept emerged.
The same roadmap puts official modding in the first half of 2027. Jagex describes creation tools plus an in-game mod browser and installer, with modding planned across Dragonwilds’ platforms. That roadmap is evidence of the company’s stated work on Dragonwilds; it does not supply a launch date, platform list or feature schedule for the new MMO. Future update windows remain plans and may change.
How to read the next update
If you are waiting for the new MMO, look for an announcement that names that project and explicitly assigns it a release or test date. Until then, the confirmed development stage is the useful information; the old expansion target cannot answer when it will become playable. The reports also do not settle account transfers or how existing progress would carry over.
If you play Dragonwilds, use the game’s own roadmap for its December 2026 and 2027 plans, then check the corresponding release notices as those windows approach. Keeping the product name beside each date prevents the earlier expansion concept, the existing game’s updates and the undated new MMO from becoming a single, misleading launch schedule.
