Other Mommy heads for a $27.5–28 million opening as Friday estimates differ

Saturday forecasts put the horror film first domestically. The opening-day figures vary by source, and the three-day total is not final.

Other Mommy is heading for the top of the domestic box office in its opening weekend, according to reports published Saturday, October 10. TheWrap projects $28 million for the three days; Dark Horizons, citing Deadline, puts the estimate at $27.5 million. These are forecasts for the weekend, not a completed Sunday tally.

Keep each estimate attached to its source

The opening-day numbers are not identical. TheWrap reports $13 million, Dark Horizons gives $12.3 million, and The Numbers currently lists $12.6 million for Friday, October 9. All refer to the same opening, but the sources do not reconcile the differences. Averaging them would create a number none of the sources reported.

The weekend forecasts are much closer: $27.5 million and $28 million. A reader can describe that as a forecast range, while retaining the two attributions. It is not a statistical confidence interval or a guarantee of the final result.

The preview row is not an extra $3.6 million

The Numbers shows an October 8 preview row of $3.6 million. Its October 9 row lists both that day’s reported gross and the cumulative domestic gross at $12.6 million, across 3,365 theaters. On this table’s own accounting, the running total through Friday is $12.6 million, not $16.2 million.

This is why the preview figure should not be added to the Friday headline. The explanatory chart keeps the dated entries visible and uses the table’s cumulative column for the total, rather than treating every row as a separate amount to sum.

A leading opening with a weak audience grade

TheWrap and Dark Horizons both report a D+ CinemaScore, even while forecasting a first-place opening. That puts two different measures beside each other: tickets sold at the start of the run and the reported audience grade. One does not erase the other.

Neither Saturday report establishes how much the film will earn over its entire run. This opening-weekend snapshot also does not establish a final profit or loss. The next useful comparison is the eventual three-day total against these dated forecasts, followed by subsequent weekends.

Which film is opening

NBCUniversal identifies Other Mommy as Rob Savage’s adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel Incidents Around the House, with a screenplay by Nathan Elston. Jessica Chastain plays both Bela’s mother and the entity known as Other Mommy; Arabella Olivia Clark plays Bela, and Jay Duplass plays her father.

The domestic theatrical release was October 9. That date anchors the opening discussed here; the Saturday forecasts cover its first domestic weekend.

The Numbers lists $3.6 million of October 8 previews and $12.6 million cumulative through October 9; they must not be added.
