Georgia beats Alabama 20–17: the second-half rushing shift, before a new poll

Georgia went from 49 first-half rushing yards to 206 for the game. The final score is confirmed; a move to No. 1 still awaits the next AP ranking.

No. 2 Georgia won 20–17 at No. 6 Alabama on October 10. Alabama’s official game center marks the fourth quarter complete and confirms both the result and Georgia’s 6–0 record. The Bulldogs’ ground game changed markedly after halftime: Georgia’s own halftime notes reported 49 rushing yards, while Alabama’s final statistics recorded 206.

A halftime deficit became a three-point win

Alabama led 14–10 at the break. The official quarter-by-quarter table then shows Georgia scoring seven points to Alabama’s three in the third period, followed by a 3–0 fourth quarter. That sequence separates the early deficit from the final outcome without treating a halftime report as a completed-game account.

The subtraction is straightforward: 206 minus 49 leaves 157 Georgia rushing yards after halftime. It describes the team’s second-half production, not one player’s rushing total. Dwight Phillips Jr. finished with 120 yards, the official game center’s leading Georgia rushing figure.

The numbers behind the narrow margin

Georgia finished with 455 total offensive yards to Alabama’s 346, including passing totals of 249 and 185 respectively. The Bulldogs also led first downs 21–17 and possession 33:28 to 26:32. Those are final team totals, not proof that every drive succeeded or that yardage alone determined the result.

AP’s full game report says Gunner Stockton supplied Georgia’s two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. Its account describes a late Georgia sack and an Alabama personal-foul penalty before the Bulldogs exhausted the clock. This report does not adjudicate the disputed officiating or present an uncalled penalty as an official ruling.

A final score is different from a future ranking

AP says the win strengthens Georgia’s case to rise atop the next Top 25 after Texas lost to Oklahoma. That is an expectation about the next poll. The No. 2 and No. 6 labels here identify the teams entering this game; this article does not announce Georgia as already ranked No. 1.

AP lists Georgia hosting Auburn and Alabama visiting Tennessee the following Saturday. Those fixtures are upcoming, not new results. Readers checking the weekend’s rankings should distinguish confirmed scores from predictions about where teams will appear when the next poll is published.
