WhatsApp adds permanent pins and three more group tools: where to find them
The rollout also lets members share recent history after someone joins, post a group-only Status and filter unread chats by mentions or replies. Availability may differ by account.

WhatsApp is rolling out four group-chat changes aimed at keeping important context visible. Messages can now be pinned without an expiry, instead of requiring a preset duration.
The update also expands message-history sharing. If a member has already joined, another member can tap that person’s name in the chat and send recent messages afterward. WhatsApp says the transferred messages remain end-to-end encrypted.
A new group Status is visible to members of a specific group. Members can view, react and add their own Status, and the posts disappear after 24 hours like ordinary Status updates.
The fourth change is a mentions-and-replies chat filter. It surfaces unread group conversations where the user was mentioned or received a direct reply, including @all messages; it is not a search of every old message.
The practical limit is rollout timing. Independent reports say the features are reaching Android and iOS accounts gradually, so updating the app and checking the relevant menu may still leave some users waiting.
What each of the four tools changes
Permanent pins remove the required expiry choice for an important group message. Post-join history sharing adds a recovery path when recent context was not sent at the moment a member was added.
Group Status narrows an ephemeral update to one group, while the mentions-and-replies filter narrows the chat list to unread conversations that directly need attention.
Where to look in the app
For a permanent pin, start from the message’s pin action. To send recent history after a person has joined, tap that member’s name inside the group chat.
Group Status is attached to a specific group, and the mentions-and-replies option appears with chat-list filters. Exact placement can differ across current app builds and rollout stages.
Privacy and scope boundaries
WhatsApp states that post-join history sharing remains end-to-end encrypted. It is a deliberate action performed for a member, not a statement that every new participant automatically receives the complete archive.
Group Status lasts 24 hours and is limited to that group audience. The attention filter covers unread group chats with a mention or direct reply, including @all; it does not replace ordinary search or mark unrelated chats as urgent.
Why a feature may still be missing
WABetaInfo reports compatibility with the latest Android and iOS versions and says access is expanding to more accounts over the following weeks. 9to5Mac similarly warns that all four changes may not appear at once.
Update WhatsApp, then check the pin menu, a member’s name, the group Status area and chat filters. If one tool is absent, staged availability is a more accurate explanation than assuming the announcement guarantees same-day access.
