Valentin Vacherot began his Shanghai Masters title defense with a 6–4, 7–6(5) win over Sebastian Baez on Saturday, October 10. The Monegasque had a chance to finish on serve at 5–3 in the second set, but needed a tiebreak to close the match. He will next face Tommy Paul.

A late first-set break opens the way

According to Univers Tennis, neither player had a break point during the first nine games. With Vacherot leading 5–4, he earned two set points on Baez’s serve and converted the second to take the opening set.

That made the first difference in a set where neither returner had created an earlier opening. The 6–4 score records one completed set; it does not mean Vacherot had been a break ahead throughout.

From a 5–3 opportunity to a 7–5 tiebreak

The second set supplied a more awkward finish. Vacherot broke to lead 5–3 and served for the match, but Baez broke back. Univers Tennis reports that Vacherot saved two of three consecutive break points before losing that service game. The official tournament report also identifies the missed 5–3 serve-out opportunity.

Vacherot ultimately won the tiebreak 7–5, completing the match in two sets. In the final score, 7–6(5) describes the second set’s games, with the parenthetical 5 indicating Baez’s tiebreak points. It is not a separate third-set result.

The champion returns with a different starting position

The official tournament retrospective says Vacherot arrived in 2025 ranked No. 204, came through qualifying and won seven main-draw matches. His title run ended with victory over his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final.

He returned this year at a career-high No. 14, according to the official reports. Those rankings describe two different arrivals in Shanghai. Saturday’s result is the beginning of this title defense, not another title already secured.

Paul comes before any potential Alcaraz meeting

Univers Tennis and Punto de Break place the upcoming Paul match in the third round. The official tournament report also names Paul as Vacherot’s next opponent. That is the immediate matchup established by Saturday’s result.

A fourth-round meeting with Carlos Alcaraz remains a possibility only if both players advance. Alcaraz’s next opponent is Zizou Bergs, the official report says. Vacherot’s win over Baez therefore sets up Paul; it does not yet set up a match against Alcaraz.

Two second-set checkpoints: Vacherot was broken serving at 5–3, then won the tiebreak 7–5. Tommy Paul is next.
