An ongoing U.S. Food and Drug Administration recall covers nearly 1.7 million pounds of specific light brown and powdered sugar products that may contain wheat kernels. The listed brands are United, Good & Gather and Crystal Sugar; the action does not cover every product sold under those names.

United Sugar Producers and Refiners began the voluntary recall on August 19, and the FDA classified it as Class II on September 21. The agency uses that category when exposure may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the probability of serious consequences is considered remote.

Which consumer packages are listed

Good & Gather Light Brown Sugar in 2-pound bags carries item 817773 and UPC 0 85239-08454 0; listed batches run from MHD26223 through MHD26229. Good & Gather Powdered Sugar in 2-pound bags carries item 817774 and UPC 0 85239-08455 7, with the same listed batch range.

United Light Brown Sugar in a 50-pound bag is item 810051, with batches MHD26223 through MHD26229. Crystal Sugar Powdered Sugar in a 25-pound bag is batch MHD26230. United 6X Powdered Sugar in 50-pound bags lists MHD26223 through MHD26227 and MHD26229; the listed range does not include MHD26228.

Why the total is described as nearly 1.7 million pounds

The enforcement record reports 12,678 hundredweight of light brown sugar and 4,265 hundredweight of powdered sugar. Because one hundredweight equals 100 pounds, those figures total 1,694,300 pounds.

That total includes large commercial bags as well as the 2-pound Good & Gather packages. It should not be read as a count of consumer bags, and the FDA listing does not identify every store that received the products.

How to check a package without overgeneralizing

Compare the exact product name, package size, UPC or item number and batch code with the FDA event record. A matching brand by itself is not enough, because only specified packages and batches appear in the recall.

If the identifiers match, set the product aside and follow the retailer or manufacturer instructions rather than using it. The two photographs in this article are generic ingredient images for orientation; neither can identify a recalled package.
