Türkiye vs. France: Mbappé Scores Winner, Then Leaves Camp With Knee Injury

France opened Zinedine Zidane’s tenure with a 1-0 win in Kocaeli, but Kylian Mbappé’s 54th-minute goal also produced the knee tendon injury that ended his international window.

France beat Türkiye 1-0 in Kocaeli on Friday in Zinedine Zidane’s first match as national-team coach, with Kylian Mbappé scoring the only goal in the 54th minute. The captain was replaced by Désiré Doué five minutes later after hurting his knee on the scoring action, and the French federation said he had sustained a tendon injury and would return to Madrid for treatment.

That makes the result and its consequence inseparable. France took three points from a difficult away opener, but it also lost its captain for the rest of this international window. The federation has confirmed his withdrawal from the France camp; it has not provided a club return date, so the injury should not be turned into a timetable that has not been announced.

The winner and the injury came on the same sequence

France’s breakthrough began with pressure on a Türkiye attempt to play out. Michael Olise recovered the ball and found Mbappé on the left edge of the area, where the captain drove a right-footed shot past Uğurcan Çakır for the 54th-minute lead.

The goal immediately became an injury story as well. Mbappé needed treatment for his knee, briefly tried to continue and was replaced by Doué in the 59th minute. The FFF later described the problem as a tendon injury and said he would return to Madrid for treatment.

France won the match but lost its captain for the rest of the window

Mbappé’s withdrawal changes the next part of Zidane’s first international window. Le Monde reported that the captain will miss France’s remaining three Nations League matches in this sequence: away to Belgium on September 28, then home games against Italy on October 2 and Belgium on October 5.

The confirmed boundary matters. France and the FFF have described a knee tendon injury and a return to Madrid for treatment, but they have not supplied a timetable for his return to Real Madrid. The responsible conclusion is therefore that he is out of the France camp, not that a specific club match is already lost.

Zidane’s debut was successful, not dominant

The 1-0 score also explains why Zidane’s first night should not be reduced to a ceremonial debut. Mike Maignan made an important save from İsmail Yüksek before the goal, and Türkiye stayed in the match until Çakır was sent off in the 87th minute for handling outside his area.

Zidane became the first France coach since Aimé Jacquet in 1994 to win his opening match. The result is a useful start, but one narrow away victory after only a few training sessions is evidence of three points, not proof that the new cycle is already complete.
