The Debut closes London Film Festival with Julianne Moore in Jesse Eisenberg’s community-theatre musical
Eisenberg wrote and directed the closing-night film, which follows a reserved New Jersey housewife who finds purpose and connection after joining a local musical.

The Debut closed the 70th BFI London Film Festival on October 18, bringing Jesse Eisenberg and Julianne Moore to the festival’s final red carpet. Eisenberg wrote and directed the musical comedy and told Reuters that he created the lead role with Moore in mind.
Moore plays Mona, a reserved New Jersey housewife who joins a community-theatre musical and discovers purpose and connection. The film’s closing-night position was independently confirmed by the BFI, which staged the UK premiere at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.
A closing-night film built around community theatre
The BFI selected The Debut as the Closing Night Gala of its 70th London Film Festival. The UK premiere took place on October 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, completing a festival that ran from October 7 through October 18.
The film centers on Mona, a shy New Jersey housewife who auditions for a local production. Reuters reported from the closing red carpet that the character’s move toward performance becomes a search for something missing in her life—and ultimately for community.
Eisenberg wrote the role for Moore
Eisenberg said he conceived the role around Moore’s range, writing each scene with her abilities in mind. Moore described Mona as moving toward a need she cannot initially name, with theatre leading her toward both self-understanding and other people.
That framing matters because the movie is not simply about putting on a show. Its dramatic engine is the change that occurs when an isolated person enters a collaborative space, takes artistic risks and becomes accountable to an ensemble.
Seven original songs drive the fictional show
Reuters reported that the film includes seven original songs written by Eisenberg. They belong to a fictional 1990s-style musical called Nosy Neighbours, the production that Mona and the local troupe are rehearsing.
Paul Giamatti plays Jerry, the demanding director, while the cast also includes Halle Bailey and Patrick Fabian. Eisenberg linked the story to his own childhood experience in community theatre, where performance offered both identity and a social world.
What is confirmed about the release
The BFI announcement says Lionsgate plans to release The Debut in UK cinemas on January 15, 2027. The festival screening was the film’s UK premiere; it was not the start of a general UK theatrical run.
The closing-night event supplies the fresh development. Other details in this report describe the film and its creators, but no box-office result, awards forecast or review score is inferred from the gala placement.
