Stellantis to pause French plants as long-range EV battery supply falls short

Sochaux and Rennes production will pause in late October as long-range EV battery supply trails fleet demand, affecting Peugeot 3008/5008 and Citroën C5 Aircross output; reports differ on Rennes’ exact end date.

Stellantis plans temporary October production pauses at its Sochaux and Rennes plants in France because it cannot secure enough long-range batteries for some electric models even as demand from business and fleet customers remains strong. Sochaux, which builds the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, is scheduled to stop from October 23 to 30; Rennes, where the Citroën C5 Aircross is produced, faces a late-October stoppage tied to the same battery constraint.

The reports agree on the cause but not every calendar detail. Reuters and AFP/Euronews list Rennes from October 22 to 30, while L’Argus says the works council was told October 22 to November 2, equal to seven technical-unemployment days. That difference matters for workers and supply planning, so the exact Rennes end date remains source-dependent rather than being silently resolved.

Which French plants are stopping, and why

At Sochaux, Stellantis says the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 line will stop from October 23 through October 30 because long-range battery availability is not keeping up with demand. Reuters and AFP/Euronews report the same battery-driven reason for Rennes, where the Citroën C5 Aircross is built.

Not every October shutdown has the same cause. Mulhouse is also scheduled to pause for part of the month, but Reuters says that stoppage is unrelated to the long-range battery shortage. Poissy’s separate October pause is described by AFP/Euronews as a stock and market-demand adjustment.

Strong EV demand can still produce a factory stoppage

The apparent contradiction is a component bottleneck: Stellantis says long-range versions are especially popular with fleet and business customers, but its current battery supply cannot keep pace. The company says the pauses are temporary adjustments intended to align vehicle output with the components actually available.

Reuters reports that the long-range batteries come from Automotive Cells Co. (ACC), the battery joint venture backed by Stellantis, Mercedes and TotalEnergies. ACC said its September module production would be close to its output for all of 2025, showing a sharp ramp-up, but Stellantis says deliveries still are not sufficient for current demand.

What the Rennes date discrepancy means for readers

Reuters and AFP/Euronews describe the Rennes shutdown as October 22-30. L’Argus, citing information presented to the Rennes-La Janais works council, gives October 22-November 2 and says the line will lose seven working days. The safest conclusion is therefore a seven-workday late-October pause, with the calendar end date differing across contemporaneous reports.

For buyers, the immediate takeaway is about near-term production capacity rather than a collapse in EV demand: the affected versions are the long-range Peugeot 3008/5008 and Citroën C5 Aircross. Stellantis has not provided a model-by-model delivery-delay forecast, so the stoppages should not be converted into a specific customer wait-time estimate.
