Slovakia approves Tesla Assisted Driving—but owners should wait for the app before trying it
Tesla says rollout will begin soon after Slovakia recognized the provisional Dutch approval. The system still requires active supervision and does not make the car autonomous.

Slovakia approved Tesla’s supervised driver-assistance system on October 16, and Tesla said rollout would begin soon. The decision makes Slovakia the ninth EU country to recognize the provisional Dutch approval behind the European release.
Approval is not the same as immediate activation. Tesla’s Slovak support page tells owners to check eligibility in the Tesla app and says eligible vehicles receive the feature through a software update once it is available.
What changed on October 16
Reuters reported that Slovakia approved Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system and that the company said rollout would begin soon. In Europe, Tesla now calls the product Tesla Assisted Driving.
EVwire reported that Slovakia recognized the provisional type approval issued by the Dutch vehicle authority RDW in April. That national recognition adds Slovakia to eight EU countries that had already allowed the supervised system.
What the approval does not mean
The word “approval” does not turn the system into autonomous driving. Tesla’s own European event and support materials say active driver supervision is required and the vehicle is not autonomous. The driver remains responsible for speed, control and intervention.
It also does not guarantee that every Slovak-registered Tesla receives the feature at the same moment. Tesla said rollout would begin soon, while its Slovak subscription page still directed owners to check the app for eligibility and regional availability when reviewed.
How owners can check eligibility
Open the Tesla app, choose Upgrades and then Software Upgrades. If the vehicle and account are eligible, the relevant option should appear there. Tesla says only the account that owns the vehicle can activate a subscription.
Tesla also says availability follows the country where the vehicle is registered, not simply where it is being driven. A car registered in a country without approval does not become eligible merely by crossing into Slovakia.
Before the first assisted drive
Install the offered software update and current map data, keep the cameras unobstructed and follow the in-car tutorial. Tesla’s European Model Y manual requires a tutorial and quiz before first use and says the system can be overridden whenever the driver is uncomfortable or uncertain.
Stay attentive and ready to steer or brake immediately. The system can navigate, change lanes and maneuver around objects under supervision, but Tesla’s manual warns that the visualization may not show every object or variable the system considers.
What remains unsettled in Europe
Slovakia’s action is a national recognition of a provisional Dutch approval, not a final EU-wide decision. Reuters previously reported that an EU-wide vote had been delayed while several countries continued reviewing the system.
For owners, that means the immediate questions are practical: whether the app shows the feature, whether the required update is offered, and whether the driver accepts the continuing supervision duty. Broader EU status remains a separate regulatory process.
