Sarina Wiegman extends England contract through Euro 2029
The two-year extension keeps Wiegman in charge beyond the 2027 World Cup cycle, while England still must beat Ukraine in a two-leg playoff to reach next year’s tournament in Brazil.

The Football Association said on October 19 that Sarina Wiegman has extended her contract as England women’s head coach through the end of Euro 2029. Reuters and the Guardian independently confirmed the new horizon and reported that her previous deal was due to end after the 2027 World Cup.
The agreement preserves the leadership team behind back-to-back European titles, but it does not change England’s immediate task: the Lionesses still face Ukraine in a two-leg playoff for a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
The extension runs through Euro 2029
The FA says Wiegman has signed through the end of UEFA Women’s Euro 2029 in Germany. Reuters and the Guardian report that her previous agreement was due to expire after the 2027 World Cup, making this a two-year extension rather than a new appointment.
The immediate assignment is still World Cup qualification
England have not yet secured a place at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. Reuters and the FA say the Lionesses face Ukraine over two legs in November and December, with the decisive match at Wembley on December 5. The contract announcement therefore settles the longer horizon without removing the next competitive gate.
Her record explains the long-term decision
Wiegman took charge in September 2021. England won their first major trophy at Euro 2022, retained the title in 2025 and finished runners-up at the 2023 World Cup. The FA and the Guardian note that she has reached five successive major-tournament finals, a run that also includes her 2017 European title with the Netherlands.
The staff and tournament pathway remain connected
The FA says assistants Janneke Bijl and Arvid Smit and goalkeeping coach Darren Ward will continue. England will also contest the 2027 Nations League, which can create a qualification route for a Team GB squad at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, before Euro 2029 in Germany. Olympic participation is conditional, not guaranteed by this contract.
What the announcement does not guarantee
A contract through 2029 does not itself qualify England for the 2027 World Cup, secure a place at the 2028 Olympics or promise another title. The official announcement and Reuters report do not disclose salary or performance clauses. The confirmed news is continuity of leadership; the sporting outcomes still depend on qualification and results.
