Can You Replace a Stacked Washer and Keep the Dryer?
Sometimes you can keep the working dryer. Before buying a replacement washer, confirm the exact washer, dryer and stacking kit combination, then arrange for the dryer to be taken down and reinstalled.

Yes—if you have two separate appliances and the manufacturer confirms a compatible replacement washer and stacking kit for your existing dryer. Buying a whole new pair is not automatically necessary. But a matching brand or width does not establish compatibility, and a compatible pair does not by itself settle what your delivery crew will install.
Use the checks below before placing a U.S. order. They are for a separate dryer mounted above a separate front-load washer. A one-piece laundry center or an all-in-one washer-dryer needs its own manufacturer's repair and replacement guidance.
Start with the dryer you want to keep
Record the dryer's complete model number, including letters or suffixes after a slash. Use an accessible label, your original paperwork or an existing photo; do not pull apart the stack just to find it. Also record the failed washer's model and the stacking kit's model if you know it. Write “unknown” when you do not.
On the manufacturer's support site, find the retained dryer's manual or stacking instructions. Then check the proposed washer and kit documentation for the same combination. If a compatibility chart or manual does not settle it, ask the manufacturer's support team to confirm all three model numbers together. A useful request is: “Can dryer [full model] be stacked on washer [full model], and which exact kit is approved?”
Save the relevant manual page or the brand's written reply, including its date. A retail question answered by the manufacturer can be useful model evidence; an answer from an unidentified shopper, a search summary or a list of frequently bought accessories does not provide the same confirmation.
What a specific approval looks like
Samsung: in a May 29, 2025 answer on Lowe's, Samsung confirms that dryer DV42H5000EW/A3 can be stacked on washer WF45T6000AW using kit SKK-8K. That answer names the retained dryer, replacement washer and required kit together.
LG: an LG Digital Customer Care answer on Best Buy confirms dryer DLE3170W with washer WM3400CW and kit KSTK4. The page does not supply an exact publication date; we checked the answer on October 4, 2026.
These are examples of manufacturer confirmation, not a shopping shortlist or approval for similar model numbers. They show that different model years do not automatically require replacing both machines. Reconfirm the exact combination you intend to buy, and let the installer assess the condition of the appliance being retained.
Identify the kit, including any limits
Do not assume the old bracket can be reused because it held the previous pair. Do not assume every replacement requires a new kit either. Ask which kit and components are required for the approved combination, and whether the existing hardware is identifiable, complete and acceptable for reuse. If that cannot be established, resolve the kit question before delivery.
Samsung describes SKK-8K as fitting most 27-inch Samsung front-load pairs. “Most” is not confirmation for every pair. Its MultiControl accessory also has a separate requirement: the washer and dryer must support that feature. Mechanical stacking approval alone does not promise shared controls.
Check room fit as a separate question
Give the installer the proposed model's installation instructions and the available space. Check depth, total stacked height, door opening, ventilation and service clearances—not just width. The old pair fitting in the closet does not prove the replacement will fit. Use the exact manuals for utilities and clearances, with the dryer above the washer; arrange any necessary site work before the appointment.
Confirm who will handle the existing dryer
Once the pair is confirmed, ask the retailer or installer about the actual job: taking down the working dryer, removing the failed washer, installing the replacement and putting the retained dryer back. Make sure the order describes that work. A service listing that includes stacking does not necessarily answer every part of an existing-stack replacement.
Best Buy's U.S. washer installation page includes stacking a front-load washer with a compatible dryer and kit. It lists old-washer haul-away separately and says relocation does not include reconnection. Confirm the handling and reconnection of the dryer you are keeping rather than treating “installation” as a complete description.
Costco's U.S. Washer Delivery Guidelines, version 22.0 dated September 14, 2026, say the team uses the correct manufacturer's kit. Its haul-away service is one-for-one, for a like item, with the old appliance ready at delivery. Ask how your existing stack must be prepared and who will prepare it; that policy is not an individual appointment confirmation.
Send this order-confirmation request
“I am replacing washer [old model] with [new model] and keeping dryer [full model]. The manufacturer's approved kit is [kit model]; the supporting document or reply is [link/date]. Please confirm who will unstack and protect the existing dryer, remove the failed washer, install and connect the replacement, then restack and reconnect the retained dryer. Please list the required new parts, site work, appointment sequence and total service cost. Haul away the failed washer only; the dryer stays.”
This is a suggested request, not a promise of service. If separate contractors are involved, agree on the sequence before booking delivery and keep each confirmation with the order.
Choose the next step when a check fails
No model-specific approval found: keep the purchase on hold while the manufacturer checks the combination or identifies another supported washer. Missing evidence means the pairing is unconfirmed; it does not establish that no compatible replacement exists.
Manufacturer says the pair is incompatible: do not substitute an improvised bracket, drilled mounting holes or tape. Compare another approved washer, repair of the failed unit, or side-by-side placement if the individual manuals and room allow it. A new matched pair remains an option when the workable alternatives do not fit your needs.
Pair approved, installer declines the job: ask which part is outside that service's scope. Another qualified installer may be able to handle the approved arrangement, but obtain a clear quote and appointment plan first. An installation refusal and a manufacturer incompatibility decision are different reasons to pause.
What to have settled before delivery
You should have the exact model and kit confirmation, a room and site plan the installer accepts, and a written assignment for handling both machines while hauling away only the failed washer. Keep that record through installation. Ask the crew to explain the completed connections and function checks, and document unresolved work before closing the job.
