Rays name Freddy Peralta to face Yankees’ Cam Schlittler in ALDS Game 2

Peralta starts Monday after Tampa Bay used only two pitchers in its opener. His 3.25 ERA with the Rays covers 10 regular-season starts, a separate sample from his earlier Mets results.

The Tampa Bay Rays have chosen Freddy Peralta to start Game 2 of their American League Division Series against the New York Yankees on Monday, October 5. He will face Cam Schlittler with Tampa Bay leading the best-of-five series 1–0. The assignment brings Peralta’s improved results since his trade from the Mets into the next game of the series.

The confirmed matchup for Monday

Sportsnet reports that Tampa Bay named Peralta on Saturday. New York will turn to Schlittler, giving the game a clear starting-pitcher matchup while the Yankees seek to level the series. The announcement concerns who begins the next game; later pitching changes will depend on how it unfolds.

Game 2 is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Monday, October 5, at Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay’s opening win gives it an advantage, but the series requires three wins to advance. A second victory would move the Rays to 2–0; it would not finish the series.

Two ERA figures, two different samples

Peralta recorded a 4.99 earned run average across 22 starts with the Mets and a 3.25 ERA across 10 starts with Tampa Bay, according to both AP and Sportsnet. The Rays figure describes his regular-season work after the trade. It is not his full-season ERA or a postseason result.

ERA expresses earned runs allowed per nine innings. The lower Tampa Bay figure shows better results in that stretch, but the samples differ in length. Simply averaging 4.99 and 3.25 would not produce his combined ERA: that calculation needs the earned runs and innings from both periods. Neither rate predicts Monday’s score.

The opener left pitching options available

Drew Rasmussen worked eight innings in Game 1, and Bryan Baker handled the ninth. AP reports that they were the only Rays pitchers used. That limited workload matters beyond the 1–0 result: Peralta reaches his assigned start without having been called into that game, and the rest of the pitching group also avoided additional game work.

Rest gives manager Kevin Cash options when deciding how to support his starter. It does not establish a planned number of innings for Peralta or promise which reliever will appear. The practical takeaway from the opener is the availability of those options, rather than a forecast that the next game will follow the same pitching pattern.

The roster and the daily assignments remain separate

The Yankees’ October 3 ALDS roster announcement established the players selected for this series. A Game 2 starting-pitcher announcement answers a more specific question. Readers should use that earlier roster report as background and the next confirmed lineup for the batting order, rather than assume that every listed player will start.

There is also no complete, settled rotation to project from these two names. AP’s Sunday report said New York was still considering Max Fried or Carlos Rodón for Game 3 and described Nick Martinez as likely for Tampa Bay. Those descriptions remain conditional. The confirmed news here is Peralta against Schlittler in Game 2.
