Minecraft launches natively on Switch 2: the free upgrade, paid offer and visual limits
Minecraft is now available as a native Nintendo Switch 2 edition with Vibrant Visuals and a revised Super Mario Mash-Up Pack. The free path applies to eligible digital owners; physical owners instead receive a limited-time discounted Ultimate Collection offer.

Minecraft launched for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27 with directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and world transfer from the original Switch version. The practical question is not simply whether an upgrade exists, but which offer applies to a digital copy, a physical copy or a new purchase.
What the native edition changes
The Switch 2 release is a native version rather than the older Switch build running unchanged. Nintendo and Mojang list directional lighting, volumetric fog, dynamic shadows and broader Vibrant Visuals support, including supported Marketplace content. The included Super Mario Mash-Up Pack has also been updated for the new visual pipeline. The enhancement is cosmetic: neither announcement describes a separate ruleset, exclusive survival mechanics or a replacement for existing worlds.
The free path is for eligible digital owners
If a player already owns a digital Minecraft copy for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo offers an eShop path to the digital Standard Edition for Switch 2. Mojang says it is free in most regions, but it explicitly lists Japan, Taiwan and Thailand as exceptions with prices of 100 yen, 30 New Taiwan dollars and 25 Thai baht. The free wording should not be extended to every physical copy, every region or the Deluxe and Ultimate bundles.
Physical owners get a different, time-limited offer
Owners of a physical Switch edition are not promised a free Standard Edition license. Instead, Nintendo and Mojang say all prior players, including physical owners, can launch the Switch version on a Switch 2 from October 27, 2026 at 9 a.m. Pacific through January 31, 2027 at 9 a.m. Pacific. An in-game message then offers the digital Ultimate Collection at a discount. The announcements do not publish one universal discount amount, so readers should rely on the message shown for their account and region.
Visual and online limits still matter
Vibrant Visuals is not available in every situation. Both official pages name split-screen and certain Marketplace worlds or content as exceptions. Nintendo also states that cross-platform play requires a Microsoft Account and online multiplayer requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership sold separately. Included or purchased Minecoins on a Nintendo device remain within the Nintendo ecosystem. These limits are separate from world transfer: existing Switch worlds can be carried over so players can continue them on Switch 2.
