Huawei Mate 90 launches with HarmonyOS 7: prices, chips and model limits

Huawei's new flagship line starts at 5,999 yuan, while the 16GB/512GB Mate 90 Pro Max costs 9,999 yuan and uses the Kirin 9050 Pro; chip supply, global availability and company performance claims still need careful boundaries.

Huawei has launched the Mate 90 smartphone series in China with HarmonyOS 7, a wider spread of Kirin processors and higher prices at the top of the range. The practical first-day answer is not that every Mate 90 is the same: the standard model starts at 5,999 yuan, the Pro starts at 6,999 yuan, and Reuters reports 9,999 yuan for the 16GB/512GB Pro Max.

The Pro Max is among the premium models using Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro and its LogicFolding architecture. Huawei's own standard Mate 90 page names a Kirin 9030 instead, so buyers should verify the exact model rather than treating the 9050 Pro as a series-wide specification.

Price and model snapshot

Huawei's lineup includes the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max and Mate 90 RS. Reuters gives starting prices for the standard and Pro phones but specifies a memory-and-storage configuration for the 9,999-yuan Pro Max, so those figures are not directly comparable as identical configurations.

The phones run HarmonyOS 7. Reuters describes it as Huawei's Android-free operating system and reports Huawei's claim that it supports more than 450,000 apps and services. The launch materials reviewed here cover China; they do not establish a global release date, overseas pricing or identical app availability in every market.

What LogicFolding changes — and what it does not prove

Huawei says LogicFolding stacks selected logic areas vertically and uses hybrid bonding to shorten connections. Its technical release claims higher transistor density and gains in performance or energy efficiency, while Reuters notes that the approach also requires more wafers to produce.

Those figures are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks for every Mate 90 model. Huawei also did not disclose the manufacturer of the Kirin 9050 Pro. Reuters says SMIC is widely believed to make Kirin chips but had not confirmed that point, so the manufacturer should remain stated as unconfirmed.

Confirmed standard Mate 90 hardware

Huawei's China product page lists a typical 6,600 mAh battery for the standard Mate 90, with up to 66W wired and 50W wireless charging when used with compatible Huawei accessories. It also describes IP68 and IP69 results under controlled laboratory conditions and warns that water and dust protection can decline with normal wear.

The same page lists Beidou satellite messaging and related outdoor functions, but it explicitly limits satellite services to mainland China and attaches activation, network and open-sky conditions. Those functions should not be presented as universally available outside that scope.

The launch-day boundary

Huawei says the top-end Mate 90 models improve overall performance by as much as 31% over the previous flagship generation. At the same time, the company says advanced chip capacity remains constrained, and Richard Yu told Reuters that rising memory costs are pressuring phone prices and margins.

The useful launch summary is therefore specific: HarmonyOS 7 and a four-model lineup are confirmed; standard and Pro prices begin at 5,999 and 6,999 yuan; the cited 16GB/512GB Pro Max is 9,999 yuan; and Kirin 9050 Pro/LogicFolding belongs to premium configurations rather than every Mate 90. Global availability, the chip manufacturer and independent validation of Huawei's performance claims remain unresolved.
