Gemini free users lose Flash and Pro from October 9
Google's October notice leaves personal accounts without an AI subscription with Flash-Lite. AI Plus also loses the Pro model, but each subscriber's effective date comes by email.

Google is changing which models people can select in Gemini Apps with a personal account. The rollout starts October 9, 2026, for users without an AI subscription. Google AI Plus subscribers face a different timetable: Google says their email notice will explain when the change reaches their account. That distinction matters if you are trying to work out whether a missing model is expected or whether you should check your subscription.
Which models each plan will keep
Google's October change notice sets out four subscription tiers. Once the changes apply, an account without an AI plan gets Flash-Lite; Google AI Plus gets Flash-Lite and Flash; and Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra each get Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. The key loss for free users is access to both Flash and Pro. For Plus subscribers, it is the Pro model.
Keep the product names separate when comparing options. Pro is a model, while Google AI Pro is a subscription plan. A Google AI Plus subscription will still be a paid plan even though the new table excludes the Pro model. The table describes model availability; it does not tell you how much usage a task will consume or when your account will reach its limit.
The same notice also adds a benefit for AI Pro subscribers: access to Deep Think, a feature Google's general help page still lists for Ultra only. 9to5Google highlighted that expansion in its October 3 report. The notice also describes low, medium and high effort levels for available models; more effort consumes more of the allowance. It gives no separate precise activation time for these features, so the free-account October 9 date should not be applied to them automatically.
October 9 is not a universal switch date
The notice says the changes begin taking effect on October 9 for users without an AI subscription. It does not give a single worldwide switch time or promise that every account changes at once. Treat October 9 as the beginning of that rollout, rather than a deadline stated in your local time zone.
For AI Plus, use the effective date in Google's email to your account. Do not apply the free-account date to Plus unless your own notice confirms it. Before changing plans, check which Google Account is signed in and which subscription it has. If the date is still unclear, the account's notice is a better reference than a headline that groups every user together.
Why Google's help pages may look inconsistent
When checked on October 4, Google's general limits-and-upgrades help page still showed Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro as available across all four plan tiers. Its separate October change notice showed the narrower future table. Reading either table without its timing can therefore produce a different answer.
Use the page explicitly describing the October changes for the forthcoming model arrangement, and your account email for the AI Plus date. The older-looking general table does not override the new notice. Equally, the new table is not proof that a particular account has already switched before its change takes effect.
Model access, usage limits and price are separate questions
Model availability answers which engine your plan lets you choose. Usage limits govern how much you can use Gemini. Google's general help page describes compute-based limits that depend on prompt complexity, the models and features used, and conversation length. Those limits refresh every five hours until the weekly allowance is reached.
A refresh of an allowance does not by itself grant access to a model excluded from a plan. The October notice also does not announce new subscription prices. Anyone weighing a paid plan should compare the model they need, the applicable usage allowance and the price actually shown for their account, rather than infer a price increase from this access change.
What to check before your next Gemini session
Start with the account type: the notice concerns Gemini Apps used with personal accounts. It does not establish the rules for an employer's Workspace account, a school account or the Gemini API. Those need their own applicable documentation; a personal subscription table is insufficient evidence for a change to those services.
Then match your plan to the new table and check the relevant date. Google also recommends using the latest version of the Gemini mobile app. If you use AI Plus and the change has taken effect, Flash remains listed alongside Flash-Lite, while the Pro model is absent. That gives you a concrete check before deciding whether a different subscription would serve the task you actually need to do.
