Judd Caulfield scored his first NHL goal as the Anaheim Ducks beat the Winnipeg Jets 5–1 at Canada Life Centre on Friday, October 9. The rookie also added an assist, helping Anaheim move to 3–1–0 and handing Winnipeg its first regulation loss of the season.

The final margin came after a more competitive stretch: Winnipeg cut a 3–0 deficit to 3–1 in the third period before Anaheim scored twice more. The result ended the Jets’ three-game winning streak.

The fourth line built the lead

Caulfield opened the scoring at 14:41 of the first period in his fourth NHL game. Tim Washe doubled the lead at 5:20 of the second. Jeff Malott assisted on both goals, giving Anaheim an early lift from a line outside its headline scorers.

Caulfield and Washe each finished with a goal and an assist. Their contributions established the two-goal advantage that Anaheim carried into the final period.

Winnipeg’s reply did not become a comeback

Sam Colangelo made it 3–0 early in the third. Kyle Connor then scored at 10:36, reducing the deficit to two goals. Mikael Granlund answered at 14:06, and Nikita Nesterenko added an empty-net goal with 41 seconds remaining.

Granlund also had an assist. Nesterenko’s late goal completed the 5–1 scoreline; it was scored with Winnipeg’s net unoccupied.

The records and goaltending totals

Lukas Dostal stopped 15 shots for Anaheim, while Clay Stevenson made 12 saves for Winnipeg. The Jets left the game at 3–1–1, so their first regulation defeat should not be described as their first loss of any kind.

The Canadian Press reported that Winnipeg went 0-for-4 on the power play. That left the Jets without a goal from those opportunities as they tried to close the gap.

What comes next

The AP lists Anaheim’s next game at Calgary on Saturday and Winnipeg’s next game at home against Minnesota on Tuesday. These are upcoming fixtures, separate from Friday’s completed result.
