Davidovich Fokina wins Shanghai after surviving Jodar’s 6–1 start

Jodar led by a set and a break, but three pressured service holds carried Davidovich Fokina into a tiebreak and a decisive third-set break. The 1–6, 7–6(5), 6–4 victory is his first Masters 1000 title.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina won the Shanghai Masters on October 18, beating Rafael Jodar 1–6, 7–6(5), 6–4 after recovering from a set and a break down. The victory gave the 27-year-old his first ATP Masters 1000 title and third tour-level singles trophy.

Jodar owned the first set and led by a break in the second

Rafael Jodar broke in the second game and again on his way to a 6–1 opening set. Reuters, the tournament report and El País all describe the 20-year-old as the faster starter in his first Masters 1000 final.

The pressure carried into the second set: Jodar moved ahead by a break at 3–2. The final was not yet close because Davidovich Fokina first had to recover that service break before he could make the tiebreak matter.

Three service holds changed the second set

After getting the break back, Davidovich Fokina faced break points in three successive service games. Reuters reports that he saved them and forced the set to a tiebreak; the official tournament account specifies pressure at 4–3, 5–4 and 6–5.

That sequence is the hinge of the match. The comeback was not one spectacular point: it was repeated survival on serve, followed by a 7–5 tiebreak that reset a final Jodar had controlled.

The deciding set turned on the second break

Davidovich Fokina broke at the start of the third set, but Jodar broke straight back. At 2–2, Davidovich Fokina broke again and then protected the advantage through 6–4. El País recorded the same break-back and decisive second break.

Reuters describes two Davidovich Fokina breaks in the deciding set. Read together, the sources show why the final score matters: the early exchange did not settle the match; the later break and four closing service games did.

The title changes the scale of Davidovich Fokina’s season

The 1–6, 7–6(5), 6–4 win took two hours and 27 minutes by Reuters’ timing; the tournament account lists two hours and 28 minutes. Because those clocks differ by one minute, this report describes the duration as roughly two hours and 28 minutes rather than inventing false precision.

It is Davidovich Fokina’s first Masters 1000 title and third ATP singles trophy, after Mallorca and Chengdu earlier in 2026. The official report says he had lost his first five tour-level finals before winning his past three.

Rankings are scheduled outcomes, not yet a published table

Reuters and the tournament report say Davidovich Fokina is set to rise 13 places to a career-high No. 13 when the rankings are released Monday. The tournament report also projects Jodar at a joint-career-high No. 11.

Those are stated ranking outcomes tied to the next official release, not a live ranking table captured inside this article. The final score and championship are fixed; later ATP Finals qualification remains a separate result.
