Maja Chwalińska won the first WTA Tour title of her career by beating Sonay Kartal 2–6, 6–4, 6–2 in the Wuhan Open final on October 18. The Polish player recovered from a set and a break down and finished the match with five consecutive games.

The WTA recorded the final at 2 hours, 43 minutes. Chwalińska’s first title arrived at WTA 1000 level after a week in which she also defeated Iga Świątek in the semifinals.

Kartal controlled the opening set

Kartal used forceful forehands to take the first set 6–2. She then broke for a 2–0 lead in the second, leaving Chwalińska a set and a break behind.

Chwalińska missed with drop shots and slices early, while Kartal dictated the shorter points. The final’s direction changed only after the Pole began extending rallies and hitting with greater depth.

Chwalińska reset the match

Chwalińska converted her fifth break-point chance in Kartal’s next service game to get back on serve. At 4–4 she negotiated the critical stage, then took the 71-minute second set 6–4.

Reuters reported three breaks for Chwalińska in the set. Her changes of direction and a defensive right-handed lob disrupted Kartal’s rhythm and forced a deciding set.

Five straight games delivered the title

Chwalińska broke for 3–2 in the third set and did not lose another game. She saved three break points while serving for the match and completed the comeback 6–2.

The victory made her the fourth player since the current WTA 1000 format began in 2009 to win a first career title at that level, according to the tour.

What the result established

Chwalińska secured her first tour-level trophy and is projected by the WTA to rise from No. 22 to a career-high No. 11. Kartal is projected to climb from No. 170 to No. 50.
