Capitals beat Rangers 3–1; Shesterkin ruled out for the season
Jenner’s first Washington goal decided Friday’s game. Saturday’s injury update changes the outlook: Shesterkin is out for the season and Korpisalo for four weeks.

Boone Jenner scored his first goal for Washington to break a 1–1 tie late in the second period, and the Capitals beat the New York Rangers 3–1 on Friday night at Capital One Arena. The result ended New York’s four-game winning streak and moved Washington to 3–1–0.
Saturday's update settled the immediate availability question: the Rangers announced on October 10 that Igor Shesterkin will miss the rest of the season with a lower-body injury. Joonas Korpisalo will be out four weeks, leaving Dylan Garand to take the next start. Friday's lack of a postgame update should no longer be read as the current outlook.
Lafreniere scores first, then Liljegren answers
Alexis Lafreniere opened the scoring on a New York power play at 10:17 of the first period. He moved through the high slot and beat Logan Thompson with a wrist shot, giving him four goals across two games after his hat trick against the Islanders.
Washington tied the game at 6:08 of the second period. Timothy Liljegren’s point shot traveled through traffic and beat Shesterkin, giving the defenseman his first goal for the Capitals. The period remained tied when Shesterkin was injured at 8:20.
Shesterkin leaves and Garand takes over
Shesterkin left Friday's game at 8:20 of the second period after appearing to jam his right skate into the post while recovering to his net during a Washington power play. He needed help leaving the ice. Saturday's confirmed season-long absence is a team announcement; the broad lower-body description does not justify inferring a specific diagnosis or surgery.
Shesterkin stopped 13 of 14 shots; Garand made 11 saves on 12 shots in relief. The October 10 update also put Korpisalo's absence at four weeks. These are different timelines: Shesterkin is out for the season, while Korpisalo has a four-week estimate. Neither statement identifies a new backup signing.
Jenner converts the decisive turnover
With 2:22 remaining in the second period, Jenner intercepted a clearing attempt in the Rangers’ zone and beat Garand from the slot for a 2–1 lead. It was his first goal as a Capital after signing with Washington in July.
New York outshot Washington 7–5 in the third period but did not tie the game. Tom Wilson scored into an empty net with one second remaining to complete the 3–1 final. The three periods finished 0–1, 2–0 and 1–0 from Washington’s perspective.
One source difference does not change the result
NHL.com and the AP box score credit Thompson with 21 saves, while the Field Level Media report carried by Reuters says 22. This article preserves the verified 3–1 score and scoring chronology while identifying the one-save discrepancy instead of choosing an unsupported total.
NHL.com reports that Garand will start when New York hosts Vancouver on Sunday, October 11, at 6 p.m. ET. Washington next hosts Seattle on Sunday. The next meaningful Rangers update is how the remaining goaltending workload and backup place are handled, not whether Shesterkin can play the next game.
